Awesome Singing, Acting, and Production - Opera at its Best at an Awesome Price
It is a film, not filming of an onstage production. This gives the director a lot more opportunities to make the story lifelike and visually a treat, which it is. Netrebko and Villazon are at their peak singing and acting abilities. You really believe these are two young Bohemians living in the garrets of Paris, along with their ideals, art, friends, and loves. Not all of the actors sing their parts, but the singing voiceovers are great too. The first act is probably one of the most famous in this popular opera, and the chemistry between this Rudolfo and Mimi is electric and the arias are sung splendidly (probably in studio and then dubbed). The last act will make you cry and Villazon gives one of the most realistic reactions to Mimi's death I've seen. I have a select few favorite productions of La Boheme, and I'm adding this one to my list.

Great Acting as well as Singing
I'm a big fan of Alagna's acting ability, not just his voice. This little performed opera is a good platform for him to showcase both. Although the music isn't as memorable as some operas, it is definitely pleasing. It's the story and the lyrics that make this opera compelling. After all, Cyrano was known for his wit. The rest of the cast is well chosen and the production itself is top notch. There are extra scenes on the DVD as well that give a bit of background on both the choice of the opera and what role Alagna's team (mostly family) did to bring it to film. It is an opera I know I will watch again and again

Wonderful Film Rendition of a Longer Opera
It's a beautiful film, which is what you'd expect from Zeffirelli. The production is great, the acting superb, the vocals glorious. That said, it isn't the entire opera. So if your want to hear Desdemona's "Willow" aria, you won't. There are other little snips here and there as well. That said, if you want to see Domingo in his prime with the full range (including what are usually considered baritone notes) and power of his voice, this is what you get. Better than that, direction does matter in an opera, live or on film, and Zeffirelli is a master. He pulls the real characters out of his singers. His direction of the death scene gives us a finale that would be hard to pull off on stage - mesmerizing. No one can sing "un bacio" the way Domingo does. Why only 4 Stars, I'm a purest and I wanted the whole opera. That said, this is a film I will keep and watch many times.
