GROUNDBREAKING ANALYSIS

Narada Samplers #2, #3, and #5
All three compilations are consistently good "new age" easy listening. They are not at the very top of my list of favorites (those places are taken by the Twin Peaks scores, the very early Mozart "symphonies", Chet Adkins, and the middle years of Leonard Cohen (and other new age" ethereal sounds). But they are hanging close in there. They are so good that you would really have to like easy listening to enjoy them. If you are on the hyper side or an un-rehabilitated "A" type personality, you probably avoid the laid-back sounds anyway and would likely find these excellent samples of easy listening to be "annoying" (my spouse's choice of words) also. My own criteria for most purchases is the "smile inside" test. And these samplers are capable of producing that deep of a smile.

NOT JUST FOR PETS !
Easy listening fans, this one is for you. I never pay full price for a cd and after actually listening to most I would certainly not do so. Pet Music is worth the full price. It is now securely within the top ten of my favorites (that's 7,8, and 9) behind the likes of Twin Peaks, Pachelbel's Kanon, Scheherazade, Gymnopedies, Leonard Cohen. (Sorry Chet, you are now #11).
A few musical highlights: The music consists of all original works and is thoroughly consistent in mood, tone, style, recording level, and even duration (each track is about 5 minutes long and each disc runs about 60 minutes). The setting is that of a chamber ensemble with solo instruments on each disc. The purple disc features the cello and piano; the yellow brings guitars up front, and the blue disc showcases the clarinet and has the lusher background contributions from the other instruments and a few more (except the cello, which I never hear on the last two discs). There may even be some subtle synth going on. And there are the "environmental" sounds (lilting bird chirps/songs and some running water) interspersed.
This initial 3-disc set is still available online (Amazon Marketplace and possibly Ebay). Later releases are available at petmusic.com but are 2-disc sets. A 60-minute SAMPLER (also highly recommended and within my top 10) of the original set may also be available on the used market or Ebay.
In short, an excellent easy listening experience that combines elements of classical, pop, and new age music and is better at it than most specimens. Oh yes, the pets! Mine (4 cats) had no reaction to the music at all; not even the birdsong.
