Vinyl covered particle board
Putting this headboard together was not difficult, except for the directions are written in pictures. The quality is vinyl covered particle board. For my purposes, this was fine. The shelf is very convenient, as our bed is in a location where a bedside table is not an option. It is about 3 inches wide. Technically, there are two shelves if you include the top of the headboard. It is heavy.
