Light and awkwardly balanced
I've been marching and teaching for about 16 years and have used several signature models through Vic, IP, and Promark, and I will say that I prefer heavier sticks that tend to be weighted more at the tip. I ordered these sticks both because they were new and I wanted to try them and because the description of them made me think they would be weighted in the way I like. They however, feel very odd to play with (for me) the way in which the stick is thickest at the shoulder really threw my playing off, and overall the white hickory was just too light to get as much power as I would like for outdoor playing. This lightness and peculiar balance of the stick was not ideal for the sound and style I and the lines I teach play with. Overall, they just felt funny in a way that I didn't want to try to overcome for the sake of using the stick. I bought a new pair of Shane Gwaltney IP sticks a week after try to play with the Jackson model. However, if you want a lighter stick with a bulky shoulder, the Mike Jackson might just be for you.
