Old construction lens moves the entire lens group towards the close up subject but by doing so this design has integrity of construction not shared by so called internal focussing close up lenses. Downside, its slow to say the very least when used as an autofocus lens, which I am not doing at all, since in my case it is used as a manual focus lens for video or stills from a tripod.

Well made product, but not for professional use.
When we talk about lenses, we can either make objective (pun) comments based on tests and charts etc, or we can make comments based upon subjective impressions, which inevitably means making comparisons. So, my impressions, based upon what else I use is, not as good as L objectives, I use a 300mm f2.8 and a 500mm f4.5 for both close up 1/2 and not so close up 1/5... Rarely will I use a lens like this at 1/1, disliking the over enlarged images that are the delight of so many photographers - my motto, keep it natural, keep it to scale. Overall, I would say, not bad, but in one department it has a dire problem and that is one shared by long many close up lenses, it has a tendency to hunt, or to wind back and forth till it finds the subject when working at close range. Tamron have acknowledged this problem by introducing a barrel moving device that locks and unlocks the manual focus function of the lens. It is a disaster of a design, by an engineer who has never used the lens in the field - and I have worked with a few of them. It would have been better to have followed the crowd on this occasion and fitted a discrete switch. Size wise it is bulky to feel, but light (compared with L lenses). Sharpness is good, but I am looking for something better than a 200 mm micro nikkor - (i've had two and I am still not convinced). The sharpest of the micro, macro's i've owned being a 90 mm Vivitar Series One back in the eighties. Unless you are a specialist in wary but deaf close up subjects, or want to create some lovely differential focus images, I would guess a 200mm prime or a mid range zoom might be a better buy.

Falls down on basics - what you can put in it, but for the money it's OK even if you only use it to carry your lunch
