Nostalgic with some tweaks
Overall a good, faithful remake of the original Diamond/Pearl DS games.
I heard from someone that they didn’t like it because it’s barely any different from the original. Well, they’re right. It’s not. I knew and wanted that going into it, but if you’re looking for something original, this ain’t it. Try the new Legends Arceus game for a fresh open world take on Pokémon. But for those of us looking to relive those hours spent chugging away at the game with the little 8-bit style graphics on DS for Dialga and the Pokémon league, this is for you.
The graphics got a nice upgrade and so did the Grand Underground. There’s a bit more to do down there and it’s useful for catching unique Pokémon and leveling up. You can also have your Pokémon follow you around like in the Let’s Go games. You no longer have to always have a pokémon on your team who knows a useless move like Cut or Defog just to get around. And most importantly, leveling up got WAY easier since they implemented a whole-team EXP gain from each battle. In nearly every other way, though, the game is the same.
Overall I enjoyed this game. Maybe not as much as I was hoping (maybe I replayed it too recently on DS and now I’m kind of over it), but it did deliver exactly what I asked for in a very slightly upgraded package that fixed a few of the things that made the old game cumbersome. Good for old players and those new to D/P alike. This will always be my childhood game and I’m happy to have such a faithful version to play on my switch.
