IDEAL 115v 1/2 HP Motor for a Drill Press -- Where the Goal is to REDUCE the Drill Chuck Speed
The Dayton Team did a GREAT job designing and manufacturing this 115 850 RPM (multi-rotation) electric motor.
While designed to be a "Poultry Fan Motor" - - I HIGHLY recommend it to any Handy-person (at home or at a shop) who is in need to REDUCING the rotation speed (RPMs) at the Chuck of a Drill Press (Bench or Free-standing). Most commercially available Drill Presses come with 3,450 RPM or 1,725 RPM Motors and have step pulleys that can be used to adjust the speed at the Drill Chuck. HOWEVER, it was my experience that even with a 1,725 RPM motor and using the LOWEST speed step pulley combination -- the RPMs at the Drill Chuck were TOO HIGH for using a large hole saw to cut 3" holes in aluminum sheets to accommodate auto/boat gauges. An HVAC friend of mine gave me a 4-speed 1,075 motor furnace blower motor. I hoped it would produce progressive slower No-load RPMs at the shaft. I purchased a no-touch laser Tach to take RPM readings. Much to my surprise the RPMs only ranged from 1,188 to 1,176. This was NOT what I had expected or hoped for. Accordingly, I did EXTTENSIVE WEB work to find a VERY LOW RPM SINGLE-Speed 115 motor with a minimum of 1/2 HP. Fortunately for me, I found this Dayton 1YBA6 motor, producing 850 RPMs. I installed the 850 RPM motor yesterday on my bench drill press AND the results (with the pulleys on my drill press set for the LOWEST speed) were just what I was hoping for -- an RPM speed at the drill chuck of about 260 RPMs. That is exactly what I have been seeking. NOW by using different step pulley combinations I can INCREASE the RPMs - - as need. Based on this drawn out search -- I HIGHLY RECOMMEND using this Dayton 850 RPM motor (replacing the motor that comes with a drill press) SO lower Drill Chuck Speeds can be achieved. I am now a VERY HAPPY CAMPER. DH for Akron, OH
