soft dyed fingerboard finish scratches off easily
I had no problem setting it up or tuning it. It has a nice tone but quite, not as loud as it should be. This could be an advantage for practice and not bothering people. BUT the MAIN PROBLEM is that the fingerboard is a soft wood stained or dyed black. It is not ebony. Within thee days, the black had scratched off near the most commonly played finger positions. I keep my fingernails extremely short for playing, so that's not the problem. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE ACTIVELY DISCLOSED. The ad says ideal for kids. They'll tear up the fingerboard within an hour and it will look terrible. I extended the life of the instrument from days to weeks by putting hard laquer on the fingerboard, but it is already gouged and eventually this will interfere with playing. You can get a real ebony fingerboard for about $6 more. You have to read the fine print and ship carefully. If you can't find one on eBay, go to Alibaba or similar and deal direct with the source, and ask a lot of questions.

a way to evaluate the 5-string concept if you are not too picky about tone
I have bought inexpensive violins before. The tone of this one I thought would be better, as it is solid wood, i.e. not laminate or plywood. I verified it is indeed solid wood, but sounds thin and metallic. However, it did provide a way for me to inexpensively evaluate the 5 string concept. I carved the bridge several times trying different bow angles. There is a limit to what you can do on account of the shape of the fingerboard (which is the way they all are). The bow angles will not be similar to a regular violin. The supplied strings are difficult to tune, especially the C. They sound OK, just hard to tune. You will need fine tuners. New strings will not improve the sound, I tried that, but makes it easier to tune.

Works fine
Works fine. Always put a weight on top of it and let it sit overnight before using, then you will have no trouble with it ever coming loose. If possible mount on a level surface. Otherwise on a hot day, your navigator will sometimes fall down.
