An enjoyable singleplayer campaign marred by always online requirements.
The gameplay is fun. But occasional lag spikes illustrate that the decision to require connection to a remote server even to play the single player campaign was and remains a glaring error.
The prior game in the series Diablo 3 required an always on connection for the PC version. But the console versions allowed fully offline play. This was removed in Diablo 4 and this remains a fundamental flaw in the game's design. It adds all of the flaws of an always online game but provides very few to no benefits while playing the single player campaign.
This also renders the game effectively a long term rental. As when the servers inevitably go down the game will become unplayable. This is understandable with 100% multiplayer titles like MMOs, online shooters, mobas, ect. But significantly degrades the value of a game with a strong single player element. As much as I enjoy the moment to moment gameplay. I can obly recommend purchasing the game at a significant discount.
