How To Design A Small Switching Layout
    Dec 16, 2021
Some Good Ideas for Switching Layouts Depicting a Time Before About 2000ish
How to Design a Small Switching Layout is not a bad book - if you can get it used for about $20. It has some good ideas and lists some recommended design specifications that are useful . The multiple spots for industry might be one of the best in the book. Note however, switching out tracks is something modern railroad practice discourages with accessorial charges per tariff. Any new industry probably wouldn't even get approval for building a track if it required spotting certain cars to specific spots on a track, nor would modern railroads typically allow multiple industries on the same track. Those kind of practices were dying by the early 2000s and PSR has really pushed them out. Though one still might see stuff like that on branch lines that PSR hasn't caught up to or on an independent or family-owned short line where there is more of a focus on reducing capital hurdles to rail shipping. Likewise his discussion on runarounds is useful, but again somewhat dated in regards to the modern scene as railroads now may require runarounds and the customer will have to pay to build them and maybe even maintain them. The discussions on scenery, turnout size, minimum radius, and trailing versus facing point switches are fairly timeless. The discussion on goals is one that should be headed. The book could have benefited from a good editor and some additional prototype examples. I can think of several interesting situations I have encountered that would make for fun switching - e.g. a spur restricted from locomotives and/or long cars account weight restrictions and/or curvature thus reachers must be used as an handle to dig into the track. Or intraplant switch moves. Of course those kind of locations and services are declining due to modern practices as well.

    Worth the read
I find Leighton Flowers to be helpful for the layman in breaking the issues down to understandable concepts. He avoids bomb-throwing in contrast to some of the proponents of the ideas he is arguing against.
