Very important book on the Middle. East...
This slim volume on 19th century Sudan is a real eye-opener on the political, social, religious and economic forces that have shaped not only the history of Sudan but that of the entire Middle East. Radical Islam is not a new phenomenon but a very old factor in the region. British colonialism is shown by the author, Murray Fradin to be, basically a militant response to Western incursions. The Suez Canal played a major role, at this time as it posed a very strong commercial and economic challenge to the entire region, including, of course, Egypt. Britain sought to protect its' commercial and economic interests in the entire area. A very revealing book and a MUST reading!
