Annie's Attic SLEEPOVER PARTY 18 Inch Doll Sewing #151060 New 2014 Nadeen Ward
    Nov 23, 2016
A marginal yes on this one
Most of the patterns in this book are readily available from the scads of 18 inch doll patterns available in the pattern catalogues now and on eBay for those that are OOP. However, it is worth the price of purchase for the 'jamas-with-the-feet-on since that is one pattern that I have yet to see commercially. Even paying full price to get the one pattern is worth it, for it's still less than the retail price of commercial patterns. The patterns are clearly printed, but the seam allowances are implied, not printed. You have to remember that the seam allowance is 1/4 inch unless otherwise stated. I'd recommend photocopying the sheets to cut out so that, should a pattern piece go astray, you still have the "master" to copy from again--even more important if, as some companies do, the patterns are printed on BOTH sides of the included sheets.
    Zorro The Gay Blade

    George Hamilton Spoofs Zorro
I have been enamored of Zorro since Disney featured stories about him on "The (original) Mickey Mouse Club" in the 1950s. When Antonio Banderas reprised the role, my geriatric heart still throbbed over Zorro's escapades. George Hamilton, however, takes the character of Zorro to a different level altogether, spoofing the hero as twins, one of which is steadfast and serious, the other flamboyant. Originally released on July 17, 1981, this is NOT a politically correct version of alternative lifestyles. This is a movie that is meant to poke fun at the movie genre, not the lifestyle.

Vintage Patterns and How to Use Them
Vintage patterns are a wonderful way for collectors to dress vintage dolls appropriately or to just revisit one's own childhood or to teach sewing skills to a new generation of dolly lovers. However, vintage patterns aren't printed like the patterns of today. Most assume that the sewer has good basic sewing skills and can interpret patterns with minimal markings (if any). The newspaper patterns so popular in mid-20th century America are good examples. This particular pattern has almost no markings. The seam allowances are assumed and, aside from piece numbers "punched out" on the larger pieces, they are identified more from the instruction sheets than the pattern pieces themselves. However, they are no more difficult to sew than any modern pattern of today. Keep in mind that the doll patterns may or may not have been designed for a particular doll. In this case, it is a 14 inch Shirley Temple, whose body type differs from, say, a P90 Toni doll or a 15 inch Sweet Sue. I HIGHLY recommend purchasing muslin (35 inch muslin is inexpensive and a yard will suffice for several garments (you don't need to fit gathered skirt pieces) and making a muslin "dummy" or mock-up and fit that to your particular doll to ensure a good fit. If the garment is going to be used on the doll of a small child, ensure that openings are easy-on and easy-off by using elastic instead of waistbands and velcro instead of buttons. If the dolly garment is being used on a collector's doll, try to find authentic closures from the period, sometimes available in fabric shops (Hobby Lobby is where I found dolly kilt pins in the notions department, not the button kiosk) or online. There are reproduction sites on the Internet and eBay is also a source of reproductions and old stock. Have fun with this pattern. It's not as difficult as you'd think and the slight alterations for the P90 Toni were easily accomplished.
