Cut up into plugs - GAME CHANGER when planting - Read for how I did it
There are several things I liked about this product. It arrived fast and well packaged. No critters were hitchhiking either. I did the buy 2 get 1 free so I had enough to play around with. I've read the best way to get a carpet look is to separate into small clumps and plant in a checkerboard pattern fairly close together so they will eventually blend for the carpet look. I peeled away the metal grate on 2 of the mats. I then cut into small 1/8 square plugs and trimmed most of the coconut fiber away from the bottom. I did leave a small square of fiber where the roots are. That small square ended up being a game changer when planting. If you have ever tried planting plugs of DHG you know how frustrating it can be trying to keep them planted. The little piece of fiber I left on acted as a helper when planting. It has been a few weeks now and I have not had 1 peice with the fiber works it's way free and float to the top. I am now starting to see runners in the plugs planted close to the glass. I planted the mat I left in tact and that has done quite well also. If you are thinking of planting plugs I would strongly recommend going this route and trimming away from the fiber matting. Bonus - you get a ton of plugs per mat (30ish)
