Not only a great model, but a great experience!
I am by no means an expert in Gunpla models, and this is my first one, so I will just explain my own personal experience.
The first thing I noticed is that the box is HUGE, and there are many, MANY parts in there, along with 3 sheets of stickers, some metal parts, 2 LED units, and some photo etched parts. The directions are very comprehensive, and I'd recommend reading through them before you start. The build is in 3 phases (though it says 5...): the substructure base, the structural reinforcement, and finally adding the outer armor/markings. Each phase is broken down by sections of the body - the legs, waist, chest, arms, and head. Each section lists all the parts trees you'll need at the beginning of the build; no need to dig through looking for parts in each tree each time you need to build a section. You can get away without painting 95% of the model (the armor parts come in slightly different shades, adding modulation); the only thing I painted were the small figures that come with it (a small detail brush would be helpful here). No glue is needed for this, and all the pieces fit perfectly and securely; once together, the model can be posed in many different ways; you can even display with the access hatches opened. The LED unit in the body has a few different modes, and looks really cool...but the actuator in the body is a bit finicky, so you'll need to shave it down a bit for it to work correctly (it was a bit of trial and error for me). The sprue gates are all in places that are either hidden when fit on the model, or in harder to see places; the chrome parts all have the gates underneath the area that will be fit, so you don't need to worry about an unsightly mark on the chrome. If you take your time and follow the instructions as they are, you will be rewarded with not only a great looking model, but a really enjoyable experience. I'm not a novice model builder, but I feel that this would be great for all experience levels...again, as long as you're patient and just take your time to enjoy the build - a sharp blade and sprue nippers are also recommended.
Pros:
- instructions are easy to follow and understand, and broken down into sections
- the fit of the parts is fantastic
- the articulation of the final model is amazing, and it poses really well
- the engineering that went into this kit is phenomenal
Cons:
- cost...it's expensive (but worth it, IMHO)
- the fit between the top and bottom sections (where the core fighter can be removed) is not very tight, so if you don't carry it from the bottom, it can come apart
- the body LED is a little finicky
If Bandai/Namco release more PG Unleashed models, I will most definitely get them as well...I had a really great time building this model!
