DEVIL IN THE GROVE IS A GREAT READ
I am white and went to high school in Groveland from 1951-54, and the book is revealing a Groveland I didn't experience. I find it fascinating and very revealing. Hearing about the history of places and family names I recognize is very interesting. Segregation was rife, of course, and I moved there from New York City so it was a startling experience for me. But at high school age I concentrated on hunting and fishing and was not involved in segregation. By not challenging the system, of course, I was complicit in it, but a kid trying to make friends and "fit in" does not consider the impact of it. Groveland was a wonderful place to grow up as a kid involved in football, basketball and baseball. The book paints a very different picture of Groveland and I am finding it a great read.
