Missy Elliott - Respect M.E. Anthology [New CD] Explicit, UK - Import
    Nov 27, 2019
    Almost too many great songs--almost.
One of the great voices in hip-hop/R & B, Missy Elliott has a knack for creating interesting musical arrangements. Several fine guest appearance too. Respect M. E.--I do!
FIRST REFORMED - DVD, ETHAN HAWKE, GREAT SHAPE
    Feb 06, 2019
    Thoughtful, powerful cinema.
This is no ordinary movie. Written and directed by Paul Schrader, who wrote Taxi Driver, it's the story of a minister driven to extreme measures following the death of an environmental activist. Ethan Hawke's portrayal of a man grappling with the deep questions of faith is understate and masterful. It's a slow film that places you inside the skin of his character. Amanda Seyfriend's work is also excellent, and Cedric Kyles (aka Cedric the Entertainer) has a masterful support role. This is the rare contemporary film that will make you think. Fans of good cinematography (I'm one) will appreciate the film's quietly stunning visuals, composed in the old Academy 35mm ratio. The DVD special features include a fascinating documentary about the film's making. The script has been nominated for best original screenplay by the Academy, and is well worth the win.
24 Frames (2017) Criterion Collection Blu-ray Abbas Kiarostami

You will not forget this film!
The final film of an unconventional director who was the leading light of Iranian cinema. It consists of 24 short films in which Kiarostami's photographs are made into moving images by animation. Not so much a story as a meditation on the relationship of photography and film. Each of the 24 "frames" is a tiny story in itself. The number 24 refers to the usual practice of shooting a film at 24 frames per second. Since movies began as a rapidly-projected still images, 24 is appropriate fro this hybrid of two visual mediums. Kiarostami developed the vignettes in between other projects; the film was 90% complete when he died in 2016. Extras include an interview with the director's son (who added the finishing touches) and a discussion led by noted critic Godfrey Cheshire. BTW: I answered No to "are the characters engaging" because actors make only a few appearances and reveal very little character.
