Excellent Resource, Photographed Artifacts
Excellent resource, well documented, researched and photographed. Unlike many books on archaeological digs this one doesn't show mostly trenched holes in pictures...thank you! This one actually has closeups of the the actual artifacts which is SO much more helpful than looking at empty holes in the ground. Tunica Treasure became an instant classic & required reading for anyone interested in the area or early fur trade artifacts and activities. My only complaint is it should have been reprinted long ago since the demand has always exceeded the supply & they now go for hundreds of dollars. A fantastic resource!

Another photo montage book
3 of 4 found this helpful I had high hopes for this book, but was dismayed to see some obvious fakes and other questionable items being showcased as authentic. Even the cover shot showing the beaded bag is fake. Authentic tin cones should NEVER have crimped tops unless they are for the reproduction market. The vast majority of the trade items shown appear to be original however & of interest to any collector of these items to compare details with their own as long as they can separate the good from the bad. I counted at least 30 spurious axes- examples of modern repros and misidentified axes-- although there are many more that ARE correctly identified. Mr. Hothem was well known in the stone age catagory of publishing, but had little background in the historical fur trade era items focused on in this book. Nearly all the collectables pictured were submitted by the collectors and sent in to the author so they might get a higher price on their now 'authenticated' items which is typical of these type of books. This is really a collection of what OTHER unknown people think is authentic trade items and not the author. This has been the disturbing trend in the publishing world concerning such collectable items unfortunately.
The photography is well done but the descriptions for them as well as their supposed value is written by the collector, not the author. There is also a broad range of trade collectables covered. So if you take this book with the understanding that this is not an absolute authoritative reference you will find value in those items you can separate from the junk. Most people however, will not know the difference & will be misled by these misidentified items for many years to come. The values given are what the buyer paid for it or would like to get for it, but a range of prices based on actual results would have been more informative. It certainly is entertaining enough to look at the pictures & take note of their details, but unfortunately I can't recommend it much more than that.

Spirit of Crazy Horse Should Be in Fictional Catagory
2 of 7 found this helpful This book should really be in the Fictional catagory. The author who is best friends with the Indians involved in the shooting of the FBI agents & the ones that killed Anna Mae as a 'suspected' informant, provides no documentation, zero evidence other than his personal opinion. From a convicted murderer he gets his 'facts'. It is sad so many First Nation people have been fooled by these kinds of books. Not one thought is given to the people suffering on the reservations, just the AIM leaders who were never voted in by them. Many whites have been fooled also by the misguided sympathy for the First Nation people by these books. The sad truth is clearly & thoroughly documented in the book "American Indian Mafia" written by FBI agents who were there and had access to all the records. Records are even photocopied in the book but the the conspiracy theory AIM members call them all lies. Based on what? All you hear is silence.
A 30 year conspiracy thats still going on under how many Presidents? Come on. Give me a break! In the end you have to side with the evidence and not opinion & even Peter Mathesson says at the end of the book he is not sure if his best friend Leonard Peltier killed the 2 agents or not after hundreds of pages defending him.
