Think you've got all the Elvis you need? Think again.
Owning Elvis' "Complete Albums" box as well as a multi-disc Sun Sessions set, I thought I had all the Elvis I'd ever need. But this box is essential because it removes all the goop — horns, background vocals, etc. — from some of his greatest latter-day sessions (1969-76), and the stripped-down versions are SO MUCH BETTER and more electric that what wound up getting released. Sometimes Elvis (and his producer, Felton Jarvis) didn't realize that less was more. The remixes are occasionally a little questionable, but on the whole this is a great box, with excellent liner notes to boot.
Sly Stone - I'm Back! Family & Friends [New CD]

The fact that it exists is crazy
This album, featuring all new recordings by the famously reclusive Mr. Stone, flew under the radar when it was released in 2011. And to be honest, the celeb-studded remakes of Sly's old hits pale in comparison next to the originals. BUT there are three new songs included, and to hear anything from Sly at this late date was pretty miraculous.
