BETWEEN 2 STOOLS
0 of 1 found this helpful This is a great idea that didn't quite get the treatment it deserved. I would have loved to give a higher rating, but the lack of subtlety and heavy handed treatment of the moral message cut a lot of the ground beneath its feet.
More than anything it is the script that overdoes it, since the two protagonists do their roles with great aplomb, and the film moves at a brisk pace, without letting up at any time. What really spoiled it for me was the almost slapstick approach to the violence, which simply went gratuitously over the top, more particularly during the mayhem at the end. The final result is a film that is neither really funny nor quite serious enough. Although worth a spin,it unfortunately falls between two stools.

Very original and worthwhile
Although not meant as an "entertainment", this is a very thought provoking work that is very t typical of its director whose speciality seems to be the esoteric. Whilst the main body of the film is easy enough to follow, the earlier part in which the director is conversing with someone on the high seas, with the connection constantly breaking down, is less clear. I don't quite know how it in any way enhances the rest of the film, and could well have been left out as far as I am concerned. The accompanying extras on the disc are just as interesting as the film itself, and tend to confirm what the author of the film supposes really happened to the collection in the Louvre during the Nazi occupation. An imaginative and worthwhile effort.

A GOOD READ BY A GREAT READER
Although this is not the best of the genre, The Fist of God as read by Simon Jones makes for some really entertaining listening. The authenticity of the story of course compromises the tension, since with hindsight, we all know what happened to Saddam Hussein. Nevertheless, the story is so well read, or rather "enacted" by Simon Jones that you are soon swept up by the whole atmosphere of the thing and can simply enjoy the ride, no matter how it ends.
There is not point in nitpicking - since either you like this kind of thing or you don't. For those with literary pretensions, give it a miss.. but if, like me you just fancy a bit of light entertainment now and again, you could do a lot worse that this.
