Aprilaire 600 Automatic Whole Home Bypass Humidifier - NEW 2021 - Genuine OEM
    Feb 25, 2022
I should have installed one of these systems years ago!!!
I installed the Aprilaire 600 a few days ago and it has kept my humidity levels between 40-45% throughout the house. I was using several portable humidifiers, but those were only effective in the rooms they were placed and required a lot of maintenance (refilling tanks, some required replacement filters every few weeks, and regular cleaning). Now, I only have to replace the water panel once per year in the Aprilaire unit, and then turn it on/off each heating season. The installation is not simple, but it is doable for those DIYers who are comfortable with plumbing and electrical wiring. For me, cutting out the ductwork was the hardest part, but only because my system is in a tight space and I was using snips. My advice, wear gloves (or have band aides handy) and take your time. In the box, you'll find the humidifier, humidistat, transformer, saddle valve, outdoor thermometer, and instructions. There are no other installation materials included, so plan on spending ~$100 on the 6" ductwork (pipe, collars, elbows), duct tape, sheet metal screws, low voltage wire (I used 18/5) and connectors, 1/2" I.D. drain tubing and clamp, water line, and I opted to use a SharkBite service tee instead of the saddle valve since I plan to turn the water on/off each season. Ductwork: make sure the template is level when you trace it out, and double-check the level when you mount the humidifier. If it is not level, it will not work efficiently and could leak. Electrical: when I was researching how to install these units, many seemed to have concerns about the wiring diagrams. If you install per the manufacturer's recommendations, you are basically just tapping into the wiring to your existing thermostat. The only difference is the ground wire that would go to the G terminal on the thermostat needs to go to the Gf output terminal on the humidistat. Then, run a ground wire from the G input terminal on the humidistat to the G terminal (or wire) from the thermostat. Otherwise, it's just R to R, C to C, and W to W. This particular humidifier does waste water, but it works. I think I was wasting more water by frequently refilling the other humidifier tanks using water from my reverse osmosis filtration system. This unit provides better humidification to the entire house, and the maintenance is MUCH easier.
