Sheer genius...not a bad note on the whole CD.
You hear Billy Mann literally everywhere you go, since he has been involved with many of the biggest hits from the biggest stars, including the Joss Stone, Jessica Simpson, Backstreet Boys, and (the ever-amazing) P!nk. But don't think Earthbound sounds all that much like any of them...it stands alone as being distinctly Billy Man, unvarnished and genuine. The man behind so many hits -- as a writer or producer for others -- is himself a tremendous songsmith, arranger, singer and player. The tunes are catchy, with sincere, insightful lyrics that, like an old pair of jeans, become more comfortable, familiar and dear over time. Both Earthbound (1998) and Billy Mann's self-titled debut (1996) are among my favorite CD's. Even years later, I still listen to them both often, hence my need to purchase Earthbound again on eBay. Musically, the music covers a range from soft laments played on a guitar or piano to solid full-band folk-rock tales of life. Low on distortion and cymbal crashes, Billy Mann's music tends to be straight-forward jangly guitar rock, leaning to the acoustic side without being sappy or pretentious. The closest parallels I could draw between Billy and other artists would be to others are also relatively unknown -- Lloyd Cole and Roddy Frame (of Aztec Camera fame). Also Marc Cohn ("Walking In Memphis") and Peter Himmelman. Okay, I'll stick my neck out and offer these somewhat similar-sounding artists who are better known: Dave Matthews (with less jazz), Counting Crows, Gin Blossoms, John Mayer. From time to time I also hear Prince-like strains in Billy Mann's music, though aside from an occasional screech or the texture of an electric guitar, the similarity is limited to a general sense of awesomeness.

Has EVERYTHING I wanted, and keeps time, too
The guy who cuts my hair is VERY fashion forward and constantly criticizes my sense of style. And I listen to him. Recently he said that I needed a "chunky" watch. I guess chunky is in, even though my non-chunky watch kept time just fine. So when it came to buying a new watch I was VERY particular about what I wanted. It had to have the following qualities: 1. Quartz movement (no winding...just replace the battery) 2. Day AND date (as I sometimes forget what day of the week it is) 3. Functional bezel (I actually use it as a timer for parking meters and such) 4. Stainless steel (gold isn't my color, and I'm not into flashy dual metals) 5. Metal band 6. Easily legible time indicators (slim hour, minute, and second hands, and would have preferred 3, 6, 9, and 12 numbers, but I'm okay with the indicators of this watch. Besides, the date is at 3 o'clock and the fully spelled-out day is at 12) 7. 42mm watch body diameter (NOTE: This watch is 44mm. My wrist circumference is 7.25 inches and it still looks proportional, but guys with much smaller wrists might want to try on some other 44's before buying this one...it's BIG.) 8. NO chronograph, NO extra buttons on the side, NO little mini-dials on the face (if I want a stop watch, I'll wear my Timex Triathlon watch, and mini-dials are distracting to the overall look and so hard to read -- regardless of what they are indicating -- as to be irritating (at best) or useless (at worst).) 9. Price of less than $1000 (yes, you read correctly...I was willing to spend up to a grand for the right watch, figuring that a quality time piece will easily outlast its owner...that's why they are often heirlooms.) I researched watches for a week, maybe two. I Googled online watch forums where watch-obsessed aficionados write about them and show pictures of their collections. (Very helpful -- thanks guys!) I looked at THOUSANDS of watches on ebay and Amazon, manufacturer's sites, knock-off manufacturers' sites -- everywhere I could. Then I started compiling jpegs of the watches that seemed to fit all the criteria I was looking for. I ended up choosing the Invicta 5243 in silver (I've also seen a picture of one in charcoal or black) for three primary reasons: First, it really did fit my requirements, aside from the size being 2mm larger than ideal. Second, it cost me only $75, which is downright cheap, particularly when I was fully prepared to spend another $925. And third, despite what I just wrote about watches being heirlooms, the fact still remains that, well, it's just a watch. The more I thought about it, the more I came to feel that I should not spend a thousand -- or even several hundred -- dollars on a fashion accessory. After all, if I need to know the time, I just open my cell phone. So this watch -- or any watch, really -- would function for me primarily as a fashion statement...male jewelry, if you will. For my tastes and budget, the Invicta 5243 is just perfect. The watch looks terrific -- it's appropriately "chunky," and it's also classy. It keeps time to the second, as checked against time.gov several times over the course of months. I've not had it underwater (again, I'd use my Timex Triathlon watch for that), nor have I subjected it to shock or abuse, so I can't write about those issues. It's a terrific watch, and I give it my most enthusiastic recommendation.
The Alice Network by Kate Quinn (2017, Paperback) **LIKE NEW**
    May 19, 2019
Trite, inauthentic, and incredbily poorly written.
I bought The Alice Network (used, on ebay) for book club. I will now put it to better use as kindling. The writing is so poor as to tax credulity. Aside from the complete lack of authenticity (Quinn cops to finding much of the story from historical sources), it is difficult to believe that the book was edited at all, let alone by a native English-speaker with an education beyond, say, eighth grade. Quinn's descriptions are atrocious..."like she was struggling under a boulder," sigh...to the point of absurdity. There are hundreds, maybe thousands, of compound prepositions. The characters and plot were one cliche' atop another. The Alice Network may well be the worst book I've read in my entire life.
