Draws too much power, apparently

On a MacBook Air, when plugged into either USB port, using battery power or with the charger plugged in, an error message appeared that said a USB device was drawing too much power and to disconnect it. I don't know if data would transfer or not because I never could get past the error message. But it is not a big financial loss for me as the adapter was relatively inexpensive. And I was not smart enough to figure out a solution.
