Crystal is Golden
Pokemon Crystal is my faovrite game in the series. It combined the hype of loving the first 150 pokemon with the excitement of discovering new ones for the first time. The introduction of legendary pokemon that you interact with during your journey made YOU feel legendary. The game can be a bit pricey to acquire these days but it is absolutely worth it.

Nostalgia Box
If you're like me and most of your childhood was spent with a Super Nintendo controller in your hand, few things will bring you as much pure, childlike joy as getting your old favorite games and taking a trip down memory lane. I'm only sad I didn't get one sooner.

Tactical Dragon Combat
The core feedback loop in this game is raising a dragon and using it to fight in the arena to earn money until it is too old and retires. Then you raise another dragon which will be stronger with the new weapons and items you can buy it from your previous run. Rinse and repeat until you're the dragon champion or whatever and try to collect them all along the way.
The mechanics of the combat are far more in depth. Each type of dragon has its own appearance and elements it can be born with. Certain elements are weak to others. You fight in an arena with 3 range bands you move between and only certain attacks will hit at certain distances. You can shoot an elemental super attack but your opponent can use their shield to reflect it back at you and vice versa. They could have more or fewer specials depending on their magic stat and trying to anticipate your enemies next move while positioning yourself for victory is tense and a lot of fun.
This is a great game that got swept under the rug due to other major titles outshining it and an utter lack of advertisement. It's also pretty hard to come by. If you see a copy in a good condition for $35-50 you're paying in what I would consider the standard range.
