Drives a hottie !
Obvious pro's are the dollar per terabyte value, but I'm concerned about the high temperatures these drives produce. Apparently, WD puts helium filled drives in some units, and regular air filled drives in others. It seems that the air filled run significantly hotter (WD80 EDAZ). I added a 40mm USB powered fan to the bottom of the case and let the drive sit on it's side (just like it would in most vertical mount NAS), and blow air through it. Brings the temp down to about 111f from 142f. I'm hoping that this cooler environment will prolong the life of the unit. Interestingly, I have a 6TB MyBook that runs at 110f under load, with an air filled drive inside (WD60 EDAZ).
I'm making sure to back up the 8TB drive often.
