Should be called "When Cavemen Ruled the Earth"
1 of 1 found this helpful I gave this a 4 rating, but I like these old movies and go easy on them. My wife refused to watch this one and most people would probably rate this at a 1 or 2. The title is misleading and should be called When Cavemen Ruled the Earth. This is not your typical dinosaur movie that usually has explorers find a prehistoric habitat in a remote section of the earth. This movie is set in the Cenozoic era, Pleistocene epoch, but they have included dinosaurs to add the danger/suspense element for the cave peoples. The writers created a caveperson language for the actors and that’s all that is spoken through the entire movie…not kidding. They used two types of special effects for the prehistoric creatures. The first type is stop motion photography and there are a few good scenes (remember, I like these movies): In one scene the sea reptile, Elasmosaurus, comes on land and battles with a cave clan. In another, over sized crabs attack the same clan. In another, a dinosaur (I’m not going to guess which species this one was supposed to be) mistakes Victoria Vetri for its offspring…. Moving on, the other special effect was live action which included a battle between a lizard wearing a sail (Dimetrodon, not a dinosaur, Permian period) and a baby crocodile (posing as the 35-foot long Deinosuchus). This footage may have been reused from a prior movie, possibly Journey to the Center of the Earth with James Mason. For you youngsters at heart, don’t get your hopes up, there’s no “T” Rex. On to the plot…The head caveman believes the only way to appease the angry earth deity (this one makes earthquakes) is by the sacrifice of blond cavewomen…He may have been a distant forefather of the Phoenicians, and at any rate was disturbed and confused. Victoria Vetri manages to escape sacrifice and make it to a neighboring clan and falls in love with one of their men. The rest of the movie is them trying to escape death repeatedly by the hand of the head “Captain Ahab like” caveman. Ok, ok, ok…the cave people are wearing skimpy, Tarzan like outfits that can be “Cheeky” and very rarely, but once or twice the lovely Ms. Vetri was in a nude scene…don’t get your hopes up there’s no porn here. That just about covers it all.
