Tamarack Perfect Balance In-Door pressure relief system
    Feb 19, 2016
No More Door Slamming AND Saving Energy
If your door slams shut when a few inches from closing when running your HVAC system, you have way too much pressure from your HVAC in a room. With a closed door, the overall efficiency of your HVAC will be reduced. If your local electric company subsidizes home energy audits and your home is older, it's worthwhile to get an energy audit to find this and other issues with your HVAC system. I did when I was about to install a solar PV system on my home built in 1997. This product, along with replacing my stamped return grille with a bar-faced return grille, sealing building penetrations (primarily lighting fixtures and ducts), increased my overall HVAC efficiency from about 65% to around 90% (actual calculated data from measurements before and after audit). I have used the Tamarck Perfect Balance system on 4 bedroom doors. It is a very inexpensive way to reduce high room pressure. Other alternatives are to add an additional return duct or a jumper duct through the walls (likely significantly more expensive) or to cut an additional inch or so off the bottom of the door (doesn't look good). If pressure is extremely high (door still slams after installation or your energy audit shows extremely high pressure before installation), you can put one in the top and one in the bottom of the door. The product looks good in place - as if it were an original part of the door. Very little light or sound passes through the product. The product is easy to install - 1) remove the door from the hinges, 2) tape the door on both sides with wide painters tape where the door will be cut (protects door paint and wood splintering), 3) trace the Tamarack pattern on the painters tape, 4) drill a hole (3/8" drill will work) at the inside corners of the pattern, 5) cut on the line with a saber saw (fine tooth blade), 6) remove the tape, 7) slide the product onto the door and screw in, and 8) rehang the door. With help removing and hanging the door, the total time will be around 15 minutes. So, if you keep any room doors closed most of the time for privacy or to keep pets out of rooms and there are no jumper ducts or returns to your HVAC system from the room, your HVAC system will likely be over-stressed. The Tamarack Perfect Balance reduces this stress on your HVAC system. I have no affiliation with Tamarack but am an engineer that understands the benefits of an efficient home.
