Olympus E-510 DSLR Digital Camera
I moved into dslr photography having previously used several digital compacts (Olympus, Minolta and Panasonic)and a Nikon 10x zoom bridge camera (great images but so slow). Being a leftfield kind of person I knew there was more choice in the market than the all conquering Canon and Nikon brands. What I wanted was a compact but robust, user friendly dslr with good optics and flexibility at a sensible price. I got all of this and more with the Olympus e510. The camera is solidly built, comfortable to hold, handles very well with no excess of buttons, is fast and responsive and contains almost everything one could want(and more)in its comprehensive menus. The kit lenses are surprisingly good and impressively compact. One reason for the small size being that the camera system is built as 4 thirds format(as are the Panasonic dslrs). A second reason is that the highly effective dust reduction system is body housed rather than lens based. The camera also offers good image stabilization. A full range of exposure modes is provided. The focussing is only a 3 point system but in practice works fast and pretty effectively. Zooming is manual. The eyepiece is on the smallish side but as a glasses wearer I have had no real problems with this. If you want to use the camera like a compact the liveview facility allows this but it is a fixed screen and relatively battery hungry. The battery itself lasts a good while in non-liveview mode eg a couple of hundred images but charge retention depends very much on individual style of use. The camera has a pretty fast start up and writes images quickly to card. Images can be stored on either compact flash or xd (there is a compartment for each) so there should never be an issue of lack of memory. The camera exceeded my expectations. It is great to use. I love the ergonomics and it produces great results. It's not perfect but then what is. I wish there was a grid in the viewfinder, maybe its buried in the menus somewhere-another slight gripe. Also be aware that for best results it's important to optimize the noise reduction system and ISO values. For this go to the excellent DPreview or Steves Digicam websites for info. In full auto-mode the noise filter and ISO settings revert to factory default settings when the camera is turned off even if they have previously been user defined. In other modes eg programme, the settings remain as user defined.
Do I like the camera? Well enough to buy a wide angle lens for myself and second e510 system for my wife! Just be reconciled to inquisitive/disparaging glances from the Sony/Canon/Nikon fraternities with their huge cameras and whopping lenses. Size in this case is definitely not more. I can highly recommended this product and for intending buyers it's now possible to pick up fine examples at highly competitive prices.

Worth it for peace of mind and more
1 of 1 found this helpful This UV lens simply the does the job that is expected of it whilst additionally and perhaps most importantly protecting my considerably more expensive wide angle lens. The filter is lightweight, well made, easy to fit and competetively priced. The product is a worthwhile investment both photographically and for peace of mind.
