This is a Wonderful DVD Player for a 1080P HDTV
3 of 3 found this helpful I first found out about this by reading the review on www.cnet.com. I had never heard of OPPO, but it had such an outstanding review, I bid and won it and it truely is an outstanding performer over a regular DVD player. However, it is ONLY for use with 1080p TVs with an HDMI input; there is no component video connections. The first thing I did was check the firmware version on the player and it was out of date, so I went to <http://www.oppodigital.com/dv981hd/dv981hd_support.html> and downloaded and updated the latest firmware onto the machine. I then put a standard Blockbuster DVD movie in it to try it out and OMIGOSH, what a perfectly clear HD-like picture and pure sound came forth, compared to my older non-HD player. All the graininess was gone and the picture just jumped out on the screen with the upscaling. It automatically upverts the picture to 1080P and to the correct aspect ratio (in my case it is 16:9). The remote control is a bit daunting, with no less than 49 tiny buttons on it and several menus, but most of them I don't use anyway. I basically use Play, Pause, Movie Menus, and use the memory function when I want to take a break, get some popcorn, and come back to the same place, and of course the Eject button. It has an HDMI button than you set to match your TV screen resolution, and once you do that, you are ready to roll. The user's manual is available as a PDF on the OPPOdigital.com website if you don't have one, and it is one of those few electronic devices where they actually furnish a very good quality HDMI cable.
This is a very thin, lightweight, low profile machine with an attractive blue light display, that performs like the high tech player it was designed to be. Sure, you can pick up an upverting player on sale for $40 at a local discount super store, but I can guarantee you it will not perform the same as this baby. This has got to be the top of the line and is for videophiles with 1080p, HDMI-capable HDTVs who want the best DVD upscaling performance at a reasonable price.
I was hesitant to buy Blu-Ray at this time as I feel it is too new, too expensive, and the selection of movies are still rather limited. Blu-Ray may be the player of the future, but it's time is not quite there yet. This OPPO will certainly bridge the gap for playing your regular DVD movies, as well as previous ones you may have in your personal library, and give you crystal clear resolution. Its too bad OPPO is not still making this model anymore; they have instead developed a high-tech Blu-Ray Player which I'm sure is wonderful, but at this time is unfortunaely WAY out of my price range.

Great CD and worth every penny and more!
CD was in good shape and played well. Love Neil Diamond and all the songs bring back great memories of past years. Also nice enclosed literature on the songs and Neil's life.
