Soprano Non Castrati
Vivica Genaux has the most amazing technique of any practitioner of Baroque music. The definition of her 1/16 note melismas is incomparable and is featured here by expert conductor Jacobs in a setting of first rate albeit rarely recorded compositions. The concept is based on her work in the movie soundtrack of the most famous castrato, Farinelli, where her voice was blended with a male soprano to express that unique sound which has been lost to history. This recording shows she has more balls!
The performance is virtually flawless, the only miniscule shortcomings are that Ms. Genaux is a bit forward in the mix, the sound is slightly harsh and the material is somewhat narrow for her huge dramatic and musical range. This album is still highly recommended; I am hypercritical because I just heard her heavenly presence from the 10th row in an ideal chamber hall, the 300 seat Weil Auditorium. I don't know if Ms. Genaux has a larger discography in Europe, but part of my problem is the shortage of releases available here featuring her voice, which leaves me wanting. I find albums of arias selected solely by their difficulty tiring: here's my high C, and here it comes again; and the other artifice of Opera Top 100 has been beaten to bits for solo artists, so the program focus is quite satisfying if not fully.
If you can't go to see her, this disc is an essential part of a Baroque collection - well, probably even if you can!

Essential bit of kit
I needed a black adapter for portable video rig to mount cameras on mic stands. This was perfect size and color with a good grip and at an excellent price

German Engineering, Chinese Built
This DSP crossover is a marvel of German value engineering. The user interface has flexibility and sophistication for the most challenging active speaker tasks, with independent crossover frequencies and choice of every useful slope; excellent, bright peak meters on all 3 inputs and 6 outputs; and card based memories for unlimited setup recall. The plethora of dedicated buttons make access to all the power fast - once you learn it - and the alpha display shows it all clearly.
The use of the DSP engine is maximized with delay, dynamics control, shelving and parametric equalizers that can be inserted anywhere in the signal chain along with re-routing of inputs to outputs. The crossover function can be disabled so this is really a general purpose DSP processor, lacking only reverb.
The downside is the number of options make the menu structure large. This design also suffers from cheap internal circuit board connectors, so that they can drop out or develop shot noise. It can usually be fixed by re-seating the connectors, but if you are doing high profile work you had better spend the $1K or so it takes to get reliability along with this level of performance so you never have to de-rack and open the case during a show!
