Like the "The Alienist?" Then you'll love this!!
William Marshall is one of the best kept secrets among mystery affecionados. He writes with inimitable style and humor about highly individualistic crime solvers in exotic settings. His 19th century-set New York detective series only spans two books, but man are they great. "Faces in the Crowd" is the second novel, set like its predecessor in 1880's Manhattan. If you liked Caleb Carr's "The Alienist," you will love this series. In fact, Marshall one-ups Carr by not only penning better, more convincing characters and action, but by writing in the exact style of a 19th century pulp novelist. Marshall also got there first. "The New York Detective" came out in 1989, "Faces In the Crowd" in 1991. Buy and enjoy them now, thank me later.
Mad Men The Final Season Part 2 (Blu-ray + Digital HD)

Don Draper Teaches the World to Sing
"Mad Men" was my favorite dramatic series of the last decade, so excuse me if this review is biased. The series' last seven episodes end the series on a high note of equal parts melancholy and guarded hope for the future. Without giving too much away, the back half of Season 7 pays off everything set up in the season's first half, particularly how selling out to McCann affects the agency and how Don and Megan's marriage ends. Finally, we see Don pursue his own destiny in an finale that will be talked about (if not debated) for years by the show's fans. All major characters get at least one great last hurrah moment (esp Roger, Joan, Pete, Peggy and Stan) and as usual the show remains challenging but never less than fully engaging. And the period detail, as always, is spot on. There's an scene where Pete Campbell is watching the private eye series "Mannix" and damn if it's not the exact episode that actually aired the night the "Mad Men" episode is set. And the recent passing of David Bowie adds an extra poignancy to "Space Oddity" playing over the end credits of the third to last episode. Per most of the "Mad Men" home video releases (Season 6 being the exception) there are lots of extras including commentary on every episode. If you're a fan, this is required viewing.

    "Mannix" Season 3 DVD
The classic private eye series, going strong in the 1969-70 season. Mike Connors is perfect as always in the title role, as is Gail Fisher as gal friday Peggy. Each ep usually has its share of clever character byplay, fist fights, shootouts, chases, gorgeous women, and great Southern California locations. You think "Mad Men" exagerates how often folks smoke and drank in the sixties? Watch an episode of "Mannix" and you'll see people lighting up and downing straight scotch like water in practically every scene! As with the first and second season DVD sets, the transfers are top notch. Even though these eps were shot four decades ago, they look like they were filmed last week. However, there are no extras (commentaries, behind the scenes footage, etc.) which is the reason I cannot rate the set as "excellent."
