A book that deserves to be read about a woman that deserves to be known
This is well written historical fiction that has obviously been painstakingly researched. It would be a compelling read even it it wasn't doubly interesting because it chronicles the life of a real African American trailblazer, Due is a fine writer who tackles numerous genres-- including non fiction (Freedom in the Family) and a variety of speculative and horror fiction.

Fun puppet
Sturdy little puppet. Only the head is stuffed, so it wont really look like the photo or stand on its own unless on the finger. Grandchildren love it.

Accessible, inclusive, delightful
These are not vapid, cloying rhymes but an inclusive way to introduce children to a love and appreciation of the real poetry of language and rhythm. Adults will also be delighted (and challenged) by works from Gwendolyn Brooks, Langston Hughes, Gary Soto, James Weldon Johnson, W.E.B. Du Bois, Langston Hughes, Mos Def, Tupac Shakur, and many others. The illustrations and CD of 30 fine readings make this a truly multi-sensory experience. Poet Nikki Giovanni's introduction puts the development of the genre into perspective, weaving the stories of slavery, resistance, religion, Gospel music, and the blues--as well as civil rights--into a background that foregrounds the hip hop music and poetry that otherwise might be dismissed as a modern urban fad.
Donate it to your school and gift it to as many children as you can. It will train their ears and open their hearts.
