A Robust Review — TL;DR: Would Buy Again, ★★★★★
Coming from a used, older ION Tailgater with bluetooth, the Sport XL is better in 5+ ways:
• The extendable handle on the back and wheels are very convenient for a speaker of this size.
• The carrying-handle voids on the sides are deeper, and thus more ergonomic.
• The top is a flat surface, excellent to use as a seat, drink table, or phone-placement surface (compared to the "device mount" poorly-contoured surface on the ION Tailgater).
• The body material is plastic, which reduces overall weight compared to the MDF board older models were built from.
• Water resistance seems to be sufficient, after 1 month use on a construction site with moderate (but not complete) overhead protection and one week-long camping trip with moderate protection. Speaker still works fine.
• The battery life, as advertised and as reviewed, seems to be excellent. I haven't run it to the full 75 hours as advertised, but I did run the speaker at fairly high-volume for 3-4 days in a row with 1 segment of battery-reduction.
• "Previous song", "Next song" and "Play/Pause" buttons on the speaker save the listener from digging their phone out of their pocket or taking off their work-gloves to perform those functions.
The only three downsides I've been able to identify are:
• The size is large. This is no afternoon picnic speaker unless you drive a long-bed truck or a van.
• The charging cable doesn't wind-up in the speaker or retract into the body of the speaker. It must be stored separately and kept track of separately.
• The bluetooth connectivity became temporarily mixed-up after switching between iPhone and Android phones being connected, and had to be consciously reset in order to seamlessly auto-connect via iPhone again. For a little while after a picnic when an Android was connected, iPhone would force me to "Forget" the Sport XL and re-pair, rather than seek-and-connect. This was fixed by following a youtube tutorial about how to reset bluetooth settings between phone & another ION speaker.
The sound is great, but I'm not a sound professional. It's enough to blast NPR's Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me through 100 feet of medium-density forest and hear the podcast clearly the entire time, even while working up high 25 feet above the speaker. The bass boost is noticeable when playing James Blake, Sylvan Esso or other music with nuanced basslines. Windowlicker sounds fantastic.
I'd buy this again in a heartbeat. I think $139 would be a better price-point than the $179 I paid, because you really have to lug this thing around. It's not heavy, but it's clunky and awkward.
See attached imagery. ION Sport XL can be seen in the lower-right corner of both, in a pile of tools.
