Nice enough but could be so much better
The unit does what it says it will, as long as you only read the high-level blurbs on the box. It promises 16TB of storage, and the 16TB is in there. It says it's networked, and it is. Truth in advertising.
The downside is that the firmware is buggy, when you download a file from it over the internet the unit shuts itself down after 30 minutes whether you're done or not, users disappear, it takes forever to wake up after it goes into standby mode, and the list goes on and on. There's just a lot of things not-quite-right with the features, it could have been so much better and fixing these issues would have made this a must-have product.
I like it well enough that I now have 3 of these. More accurately, I like the consistency and not-starting-over more than I dislike the hokiness of it all. By the same token, if I didn't have anything already, I'd go with a different unit.

Fine for long-term storage, neh as working drive
The unit does what it is supposed to do: it holds 16TB of stuff (goes down to 10TB with RAID 5 running). If you want to just park files, say movies and play back one of them at a time, or backups and access those once every so often, this thing works absolutely great. It's not the quickest and it loves to go to sleep with a very lengthy wake-up, so if you want to get a NAS-drive that'll do a lot of small files every 15 minutes, you may want to shop for something else.
Same with setting it up. The basic setup is fine. It can be a little buggy at times, but overall it works. Your files are there, it's got multiple users etc, the basics are great. Once you start trying to disable it's peer2peer client or optimize Samba, things don't work so well and you spend a lot of time re-setting things back to factory default and doing it all over again. And that's when you're already frustrated, and the slowness drives you nuts and makes you rate things at 1./2 stars and all that.
I've now got 5 of the 16TB version of the EX4. That's because, at the end of the day, they work well enough for the price. I've had one complain about the health of a drive but it went away (??). I've had one that had a bad fan right out of the box (refurb unit) and WD is not quick to handle this. Then again, average price of these units has been about $35-$40 per TB / $500-$600 per 16TB unit, and that ain't bad...
Guess that sums up the review: that ain't bad....

Just a solid color laser-printer
This is one of these products that is not the prettiest, and not the fastest, and not the anything-est, but in the end it is an amazing product at doing what it's supposed to do. Solid, no hassles, easy to set up, no 7-layers-of-drivers, it just works. I bought 4 of these (for work), and all 4 fire up 1st-pass, they feed w/o paper-jams, thank you HP for being this reliable...
