The Monarchs were a tasty band!
Giving The Monarchs a five star rating may seem a bit much. After all, I believe, for whatever reason, this was the only full-length recording they were able to make. Thankfully, they were able to make it, and eventually I ran across a few of their videos, because when I finally got to listen to this CD, I was very impressed with the intelligence and edginess of their rocking. Australia has produced a number of bands that produced important rock music. I think, despite their lack of success, The Monarchs put our a sterling record here. It was released in 2001, which is a bit late for the post-punk rock they seem to be doing, but they're doing it right, so I'm not complaining. Apparently, the songs were written and most of them were produced by Brad Shepherd. I assume it was largely his band, and it's some of the sharpest rocking I've heard in a while. It's always nice to hear a band that keeps it simple and clean, yet gets the business done right. Now I've got to find out if Brad Shepherd has managed to do anything else.

Every life is a performance.
I've loved this movie since the first time I saw it. It's a movie that grows each time you watch it. It tells the story of an ex-rock star who is looking for something new to become. What he finds is out of this realm, but it makes sense that it would be. Every other character who takes part in his ex-rock star life adds a little something to enrich this movie, and some add quite a bit to the strange beauty and richness of this mysterious movie. The truth is, that's only the movie from one viewpoint. There are a few others, but you'll have to watch the movie to understand.

A Mississippi man shows off his love and respect for the blues.
Sid Herring was the front man of a ‘60s beat group from Mississippi called The Gants. They were something special. Sid is now one of the only surviving members of the group, and made this CD/LP to tell his story of growing up in Mississippi, being influenced by the blues and musicians like Robert Johnson, as well as Bo Diddley, as well as being influenced by The Beatles. This release is more about those early influences, though, and how they reflected into his life and his music. The music here shows his appreciation for those influences.
