BLAZING COMBAT by Archie Goodwin
This is a terrific reissuing of the rare 1960s comic magazine classic BLAZING COMBAT in a fine hardbound edition with beautiful printing of the interior artwork.
These are among the FINEST war stories ever published in comics history, easily rivaling those featured in EC's FRONTLINE COMBAT & TWO FISTED TALES from the '50s, and equaling the often overlooked and under appreciated DELL "COMBAT" series of the 60's.
Illustrated by some of the GIANTS of comics history, including Wally WOOD, Reed CRANDALL, Al WILLIAMSON, John SEVERIN, Gene COLAN, Russ HEATH, Alex TOTH, George EVANS, Joe ORLANDO, et al, the book also features a fascianting account of how publisher JIM WARREN decided to try a war comic and the controversy the magazine created, including efforts by the reactionaries of the American Legion to squash its distribution. Unfortunately for war comics fans everywhere (especially those favoring realistic depictions of combat and not superhuman nonsense), the Legion was successful in its censorship pressure and the title was canceled after only four issues.
BLAZING COMBAT was ahead of its time in addressing the difficulties America faced in Vietnam and pulled no punches in illustrating the horrors of military conflict. From the ancient Greek battle of THERMOPYLE to a tale of post nuclear apocalypse survival, chief writer ARCHIE GOODWIN conjured up imaginative and sensitive stories of the human drama that is war.
The artwork itself is among the finest in the careers of the aforementioned illustrators. The gruesomeness of combat and its aftermath is depicted realistically throughout with factual accounts of history included together with a fine mixture of compelling historical fiction.
My only issue with the book is the small size reproductions of two of the four covers of the magazine, which were done by legendary artist Frank FRAZETTA. Otherwise the artwork printing is spectacular.
I had copies of the original comics as a youth and am delighted to see them republished in such faithful detail and made available to a wider audience than was possible during a less enlightened time.
Anyone interested in illustrated military history together with all fans of war stories and comics would do well to obtain a copy of this outstanding publication. You'll be taking a stand against bullying censorship as well!
