CD: LEGENDS OF SWAMP POP-Cookie&the Cupcakes (Jin-9037)
This is most awesome CD I've ever heard. I first heard the song "Mathilda" sung by Roosevelt Neddles? (unsure of the spelling) on John R's R&B show over AM radio station WLAC, Nashville, TN back in 1962. Eventually I managed to get a copy of the song by Cookie & the Cupcakes on the Paula label which I believe was a 1965 re-issue, since the song orignally came out in 1959. The fact that it was reissued in 1965 and now more recently on this CD attests to the long-lasting popularity of this song. I recently viewed several U-Tube videos featuring Cookie & the Cupcakes including a live version where they were under a tent and obviously celebrating quite a bit. This renewed my interest in this group and I wanted more!! This CD has brought me much satisfaction. I discovered they did a lot more than Mathilda, Sea of Love, and Got You on my Mind. Their version of Betty and Dupree is the best version I've ever heard. Their combination of Cajun Rhythm 'n' Blues with Doo Wop harmony, Fats Domino style piano, wailin' saxophone, and bluesy vocals just can't be topped. I give this one 5 stars!
