Truly Nifty Fifty
4 of 4 found this helpful I have only heard good things about this lens. Well, other than the build quality... Yes, it's made of cheap looking plastic. Even the mount is plastic and the front moves in and out and around as it focuses. (Hate it when it sticks out as I put away the lens and have to put it in Manual and retract it.) Still, it takes really sharp photos. Can't go wrong with this lens. For under $100, it is a must have for all who own DSLR or SLR. Unless you own higher models like f/1.2L, f/1.4 or the rare f/1.8 mark I older version with metal mount and ring (internal) focus. I try to use it as much as I can since I know I'll get good results. I change it only when I need the long reach and zoom. It's not for shooting an event since you have to move around too much to get the right shots but for portraits, it's hard to beat. I strongly recommend this lens to everyone who doesn't own a prime lens already.

Smart Buy for Most Situations
Nikon V1 is great for families. It has awesome tracking system for moving subjects that makes great for taking pictures of kids playing. 30-110mm VR is great lens for parents who play sports. 18.5mm makes it great for portraits and nice shots with decent subject isolation. (Blurred background) 10-30mm and 10mm are great but they are in cellphone territory that I doubt most people will use V1 over their cellphones for convenience.
V1 is extremely fun camera to shoot pictures with. I got a awesome deal on a whole set with 10-30, 30-110, 18.5, and flash with my v1. Another hidden jewel is 10-100mm pd for videos. Big lens but it's great for videos with smooth zoom and excellent range. Size also makes it easier to hold it steady.

Must Buy Lens for All Canon DSLR owners
15 of 15 found this helpful Canon EF 50mm 1.8 STM is one of the cheapest lens from Canon but has excellent image quality, build quality, and usability.
Image quality is superb being a prime lens especially stopped down but perfectly usable even wide open at 1.8.
Build quality is much improved over it's previous model (50mm 1.8 II). It has metal mount and feels solid in hand and in use.
Usability is excellent especially with new quick but silent autofocus (Has STM) for photos and great for videos. Has extra shutter blades for better bokeh compared to previous models. Has 1.8 aperture which can create nice subject isolation with blurred background for portraits. 1.8 max aperture also means great light gathering ability for low light situations. It also can be used on a full frame as well as cropped sensor cameras unlike EF-S lenses which can only be used on cropped sensor cameras. 50mm on the full frame is great as it gives a normal view useful as walk around general purpose, and 80mm equivalent on cropped sensor is great because that length is great for portraits..
As you can see, you get so much from this cheapest Canon lens. I recommend this lens to all Canon DSLR owners unless you have more expensive 50mm prime lens.
