Intense and up-front experiences by a war correspondent in Vietnam, brilliant writing
As a Vietnam veteran, I am drawn to books about the war years there. The author's writing is nothing short of brilliant and insightful, many of the passages deserve to be read and reread to fully appreciate the nuances and extraordinary skill with which Michael Herr put them together with.
Herr relates the soldier's battles that are both personal and with the enemy in such a way that the reader gets a good feeling for the shear terror and often hopeless feelings that are so common at times.
For those looking for a more insightful read about how Vietnam was for many of our soldiers, Dispatches would be a great choice. It's a hard book to put down, the writing skills are in their own league and it will never be confused with just another shoot 'em up blood & guts war story.

A good book but not the book the movie and TV series was based on.
It is a good interesting book and the surgeon who wrote it was actually there and tells a compelling story. However, this book is not what the 1970 MASH movie and TV series was based on so don't buy it if you're looking for the mash book they were based on. This book came out after the movie and TV series. If you want to read the original book the MASH movie and TV series was based on you want the MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors is a 1968 novel written by Richard Hooker (the pen name of former military surgeon H. Richard Hornberger). I was disappointed in this book only because I started noticing it kept referencing the movie and TV series and finally realized it hadn't been edited to mention them, it was written well after they came out. Still a good read but it's more a history of MASH and with lots of numbers and fewer details about the actual members of the MASH unit the author was in.
