It's Baffling How Good It Really Is!!
It's baffling how good it really is! I loved this movie as a child, but as an adult, I can't get over how well written and innovative this movie actually is. I'm not even a huge fan of Schwarzenegger. He made some good movies early in his career (The Terminator, Predator, The Running Man, Total Recall), but he isn't what you would call a brilliant actor. However, he is PERFECT for Conan (as well as, the Terminator). More than anything, you can really see that there was a lot of time spent in making this movie - with regards to: set design, dialogue, costumes, story line, special effects, and props (the weapons and the amount of 'snake' symbols are amazing). There is nothing cookie-cutter about this movie. Each item looks hand-crafted and original. Even the music doesn't seem dated. It's one the best scores for an 'adventure' movie I've ever heard - and I watch a lot of this crap. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for its sequel, Conan the Destroyer. In just that one movie, the character of Conan falls into the same, schtick-y category of the later Rambo and Rocky movies. But like those as well, the first ones are really great movies. It's too bad most young people will experience the new, remake of Conan before (if ever) seeing the original. Such an underrated movie!
