Sony WH-ULT900N Wireless Noise Canceling Bluetooth Headphones ULT WEAR 900N
    Jan 29, 2025
Sony ULT great fun headphones for bass lovers but build is questionable flimsy
I wanted some over the ear headphones with better bass options and NC, and the ULTs fit the bill. Got a good deal on them on here. The thing is, they sound fantastic, comfort level is pretty high, they're lightweight, easy to use, but, the build quality is very plastic-y lightweight and not very high quality. Bose and JBL have better build quality by far, even Skullcandy, for the same level of headphone and NC etc. and bass extras. However I was using the ULTs the past two weeks since I got them, today I had them on with music via my Iphone at IKEA for two hours, or so, and they sounded fantastic and drowned out any external noise and all I heard was my powerful music with powerful muscular bass and nothing else. And they are very light on the head. I just wish the build quality overall was better and a bit heavier with some more metal in them. The hinges and pivot points are notoriously weak on the ULTs from what I've read. Otherwise, for the money I paid used, they are worth it. The other BT headphones I own are older VMODA Crossfades which are 5 stars, but lack NC, and new JBL 770 LIVES which are almost as good as the Sonys and have better build quality overall. The Sony sound quality as long as you don't go nuts with too much ULT bass (use the EQ and app. features to reign it in) is nearly audiophile quality. It's not, but it's very good.
Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro Plus Headphones

Custom Pro One - Excellent bass-malleable, wired headphones with great bass, also quite portable
I was going to buy the smaller Beyerdynamic Custom Street headphones, but for some reason I managed to snag the Custom One Pros for less than what the former were going for, albeit a "barely used" pair, and I hit the jackpot, because the Custom One Pros are absolutely phenomenal headphones. If you're not seeking totally analytical studio mastering type headphones, and want a pair with adjustable bass levels, super build quality, total comfort, and are still portable and high-efficiency impedance-wise, can be driven by a phone or other devices without an amp, these are the headphones to go for. Also have a removable cable, which is crucial, and they provide you a good quality cable. For $80 these were a total steal. They sound balanced at all times unless you use the fourth extra-bass notch on the sliders, which sounded a bit exaggerated to me (like the Beats headphone range). I ran Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here from the Discovery remaster at .wav format quality, and set the bass sliders to 3, and it sounded amazing on these headphones, and, the treble was NOT harsh or exaggerated as some have told me Beyerdynamics can sometimes be. Nope, not even close! I cannot recommend these enough, and I usually hate most headphones or IEMs for one reason or other. The sound signature is warm but flat enough to please most audiophles, tight bass, mids are acceptable if not sparkling, and the highs are sublime. I see now whey Beyerdynamic is so highly thought of. My current faves are these at top of the list, Sennheiser Urbanite XLs, which are similar to these but lack bass customization, Hifiman HE400Is for the sheer planar detail (but you'll need a power amp), two of my Linsoul IEMs which are both exemplary but I don't love IEMs that much, and even a pair of Beats EP wireds I picked up, which are portable and punchy, but still aren't as detailed as these Beyerdynamics, of course. You won't need a headphone amp for the Beyers, but, I use one anyway because the combo of a Fiio amp (A5) and a Fiio lossless media player, and these headphones, is just sheer audiophile bliss. The ability to adjust from four bass levels is icing on the cake. I have a new pair of Pioneer BT DJ headphones, those are good but I don't love Bluetooth due to power limitations, and, the Pioneers don't sound as good, and, they aren't nearly as comfortable as the Beyers, not even close. I think everything sounds better wired and amped, no exceptions. The Custom Streets are probably great, too, if you want a version of these in a smaller configuration. But the Custom Ones were more portable and comfy than I would have thought, they are a bit bulky, but not too bad. I had no discomfort on my ears even after two hours! They're built like tanks with a combo. of metal and plastic, and tons of heavy padding. I would just buy them, you cannot go wrong.
    Gran Torino (+ BD-Live) [Blu-ray] - Blu-ray - VERY GOOD
    Aug 04, 2022
Great movie but this blu ray edition features botched audio channels and mixing
Gran Torino is a great movie, the issue is, apparently they botched the mixing and/or mastering with the blu ray edition, which I found out later is a known issue. I screened the film on my state of the art Onkyo HT system and gigantic Samsung HDTV the other night, and it looked phenomenal but the dialogue sounded out of phase or too low, and the overall volume was too low. I found out via an Amazon reviewer later that they had the same exact issue. I checked the whole system and tried the DTS option, was louder but not much better. Center dialogue speaker was not even utilized. But my system is working just fine, as a screening of TITANIC on blu ray proved the other day. So 5 stars for the movie, but only 2 for the audio quality which was botched. I'd seen this on DVD about five years ago and that sounded fine. I also screened Matrix Resurrection last night, on DVD, and that sounded 5 stars great. I wish they would test the mixes of a lot of these discs before sending them out to release, although I've rarely had this issue with blu-ray discs.
