Early Terminatoresque, with a macabre delivery all to unique to Brad Fiedel
Nearly 20 years later, still highly regarded among soundtrack collectors as one of the more obscure titles, The Serpent and the Rainbow, next to Brad Fiedel's other highly sought after, Fright Night remains to this day with no re-release. The film's cult status alone in the late 80s boosted the collectability of this limited release Varese Sarabande CD title, when at time of production early 90s they were almost given away. At the height of its rarity this title alone fetched between $500-$1000 for a mint/pristine original.
In today's economic climate, it has gone for far less but still remains severely limited in numbers with many bootleggers out there hawking fakes as "originals". IF this score is never re-released under a different label like other rarities, aka The Blob, Cherry 2000, Boy Who Could Fly, its collector's value will be retained for years if not decades to come.
The music features some of Fiedel's remiscent earlier works on the Terminator and you can definitely hear the roots with a slight twist for the macabre. Fiedel fans will definitely love it, others will enjoy it for the horror score appeal. Although a short disc, coming in just around 30 minutes which was typical for Varese back in the day, its a great way to hear some developing Fiedel inbetween the two Terminator scores. Although never officially released on any medium Fiedel's score for Fright Night for the horror genre is far superior!! Hopefully someday that score will see the light of day as an official undoubtly limited release, for now we'll have to settle for The Serpent and the Rainbow.
