You become the expert.
Some very good knowledge on building and repairs. If you like knowing stuff your older folks forgot to tell you, this is a great book to reference.

Good leadership book. Learn from the experiences of Mr. Conti.
A very good read. A soldier's read as it makes you want to be ready to undertake what Mr. Corti experienced. Cold, misery, absolute lack of support and weak command structure.
Nothing wrong with the troops, they performed admirably. Makes you wonder how things would've turned out if they had adequate supply, good leadership and a bit more training.
Read it for that reason alone. Otherwise, sit in ice cold water and balance your checkbook. The misery is incredible and you may have a slight idea what the eastern front was like for Mr. Conti.
