Fun to use
2 of 2 found this helpful If nothing else, using the Surface Dial just feels really good to use. It turns easily, with just the right amount of resistance. Even just using it to scroll webpages feels so good. If I were to compare it to something, I'd say it feels similar to turning a big volume knob. It's fun to even just fidget with. The rumble motor provides satisfying tactile feedback as well. The bottom is a silicone/rubber finish that provides a good amount of friction to keep it from moving around. Dust sticks to it, but it's easy to clean.
Functionality-wise, it's easy to pair with your device, just like any other Bluetooth peripheral. It doesn't come with a dongle, so be sure you have Bluetooth or get a cheap Bluetooth dongle.
Some apps will have built-in support for the Dial. There are 3 functions per tool - rotate left, rotate right, and clicking. You can create custom tools for apps that don't have built-in functionality. You press and hold the Dial for a moment to switch between tools. This can feel a little slow if you want to switch between different tools often, which sometimes is the case since each tool only has up to 3 functions. When setting up tools, you can choose a modifier combined with a key on your keyboard to make it use almost any shortcut you want. However it feels a bit limited, and much less customizable than setting up hotkeys on a keyboard. You won't be able to make any crazy macros for example. Hopefully they'll add more options and customization in the future.
