Great watch with sense of classic style.
8 of 8 found this helpful I had been hankering after a new watch for a while, something I could wear every day but with a bit of style that I could "dress up" should the need arise. I was drawn to a divers watch just because they tend to be slightly larger on the wrist and usually have clear, easily read faces. So, after much reading online I came across the 6309. It was basically love at first sight. It had the look of an expensive Swiss Chronometer, but the charm of being a bit vintage, the "cushion back" case adding just that bit of 1970s quirkiness. I knew then I needed to find one, and eBay seemed the logical place.
Firstly I should say the choice is extensive. Apparently many sellers are stating the 6309 is rare, to be honest I found 6 without even looking too hard. What I will say is that an Original 6309 seems to be a rare beast. I found that, without exception, all of the watches on eBay had had aftermarket replacement parts fitted.
I decided that, by no stretch of the imagination, am I a watch collector. I was after a nice, clean watch that I could wear every day. Something that looked fairly faithful to the original in nice working condition. So with my eyes open I started to look in on a few sales. There we're watches with non-Seiko movements, Quartz movements even. I steered clear of those. I wanted a 6309, and that meant an original self winding 17-Jewel movement. Then I found watches with obviously aftermarket parts, or owner modified projects, we are talking "Rolex" bezel inserts, mesh straps, green lumes, again I walked on by. All my research had told me to be wary, these watches were expensive, and although some of them looked cool I have always believed "all that glitters is not gold". Who did the work, to what standard and who made the parts?
I eventually found the 6309 I would call my own. The serial number suggested it was from 1984, it looked clean, had the cushion case and flat vent rubber strap I was after but it had had a new face, bezel insert and hands, all the parts of a 6309 that start to show their age after a while, and coincidentally the parts a collector will insist have never been changed (or at least changed for original parts).
For the price, it wasn't expensive. Although a collector wouldn't give it a second look, the new bezel had the correct font, the lume was nice and white, it was apparently "running strong", I took the plunge.
I live in the UK, the seller was in Michigan, USA. The watch arrived quickly however, out of the packet it was ticking away. Naturally I took the back off to have a look, the gasket was in good order, the movement, to my relief, stated 6309A 17 Jewels. It looked pretty clean in there but, being no expert I left well alone and screwed the back back on. I tried twisting the bezel, it moved positively with clicks. Phew.
And I have been wearing it ever since, it ran a touch fast when I got it, I have managed to regulate it slightly and now it runs accurately enough for my purposes. I love the way it looks on, not too chunky but larger than my old Accurist chronograph. It has a definite weight to it, it feels like a quality premium watch, except that it is 30 years old and I paid a fraction of the cost of a new Seiko diver.
Overall I am really pleased with it. If you are in the market for an automatic divers watch with a bit of pedigree for a small outlay, you won't go far wrong with a 6309. Just do your research and get to know what you are buying first. Enjoy!
