Monteverdi: Church Music
Though biographies are abundant, books that give information about the music of great composers are few. This statement is even more correct as you go more and more into the past; and thus books about the music of Monteverdi that can appeal to the general reader are very rare. This book is about only the religious music of Monteverdi, as the title clearly suggests. However, I cannot say that it is suitable for a beginner to Monteverdi. The book talks about many techniques and tricks Monteverdi used while composing his church music and it naturally assumes that you are already familiar with the pieces. There are score examples to clearly shows some points but those examples are, while concise to show the points of the writer, not enough for a beginner. Still, if you are willing to go and buy some CDs while reading the book and search the internet for some terms of music that have been used, it can teach you a great deal. The writer is obviously an expert on Monteverdi (he is also the writer of Monteverdi: Madrigals from BBC Music Guides and Monteverdi's biography from Oxford University's The Master Musicians series) and does not go into any speculative aspects of Monteverdi's music, if he does he clearly says what he is telling is not proved or is his own idea. To my knowledge, all of the church music of Monteverdi has been covered to some extent, though the Mantuan Vespers (Vespro della Beata Vergine) receives a special chapter with all of its parts shortly examined.
I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to learn more about the church music of Monteverdi. Being quite familiar with the works would make it easier to go through the book but you may also only read the parts about the pieces you know (the book has a good index of works at the end). Long story short, for the general reader, this is a demanding but rewarding book. I found the book excellent since I am quite familiar with the music but I rated it Good trying to rate it from the point of a general reader that may find it a bit difficult and not aimed at him/her.

My cat loves these!!!
I tried this on two cats that hate getting their pills and it worked wonders on both. In fact, my cat loves this so much I use it as a treat from time to time. Definitely recommended, makes life easier for both you and your cat!
