    Great Band!!.Great Songs....Average effort...
First of all, for the record, I am a HUGE Heep fan! Been following since '73. I really thought this band was doomed when Ken Hensley left in the early '80's but Mic Box held on and returned this band to great sounds (although different) once again. "CELEBRATION" is a recently recorded 'revisitation' of all their classic songs in commemoration of their longevity and rockin' spirit of truely a great british band that undeservingly seems to always play second fiddle to their comrades ZEP, PURPLE and the likes. While the band states in the liner notes that this is CD in not to match or replace the originals, (as those are 'locked in time'...as it states) I just wish that they would have spent a little more effort in this project. The instrumentation is kept very plain and any synths or effects are practically gone. The whimsical, creative moods set against a hard driving guitar and multi part harmonies is what made these originals so special and to hear them done in a studio with technology lightyears ahead of when they were penned came over, in this listeners mind, as a bit of a letdown. I understand that they weren't trying do capture exact duplication but it just seems like eating popcorn with no salt or butter. "The Wizard" for instance. One of my all time favs...the acoustic intro is so lifeless and bland I just cringed...I would also like to know why the band has ommited the fourth harmony part in the song "Stealin" during the latter part of the song (the '7th')note. Likewise the song "Gypsy" when they do the big "AHHHH"...now they do it with a straight minor chord, (1,3b,5). Originally it clashed the minor with the major and gave it a very unique color... There are some different arrangements done to some of the songs which does add some interesting moments and Russels addition to the lineup has added some awesome and fresh power to the drumming department. I have always said that the best musician who ever spent time in this band over the years was the late Gary Thain on bass. Trever Bolder has a way different feel than Thain but has injected some pretty tasty runs. Mick, well he never changes...the Wha-wha master keeps the driving tones current, yet retrospective as well. Keep rockin' mates...just keep the EFFORT on top.
