0 of 5 found this helpful One who wants to watch it as a movie, would be utterly disappointed. It is a chain of music videos, joined by a gossamer link. The story is weak, the direction non-existent, and acting horrible. The top culprit in this was the lead heroine. It is almost a 60 years predated version of Mamma Mia, another juke-box movie. But Mamma Mia had Meryl Streep, who could somewhat carry it on her shoulder.

Gilded Gold vs raw Diamond
1 of 1 found this helpful An excellent movie, a study into the teen-age infatuation of an innocent girl, who encounters two persons,
First one is outwardly perfect, both in by looks as well as his behaviour towards the girl. He is the top drawing performer of the carnival, a celebrated magician. But unknown to the innocent girl, he is gilded gold, his helps to the girl are with not so honourable intentions.
The other man is rough (the angry man as Lili calls him). Totally obnoxious to her, and if he has any tender feeling, towards her or any one else, it is carefully hidden from all, most of all, from his subject.
The movie gives an interesting glimpse into this dynamic and an interesting study into how a person has not only Jekyll and Hyde inside him, but with different shades of it - Cunning, Coward, Romantic, Vain, Brash,... and unlike Dr J and Mr H, all of them stay together, though may not be very peaceful coexistence within a (all)human being. And this delineation is what makes this movie much above average, thanks to Mel Ferrer, who could live the role, nor only bringing out the inner conflict, but the reasons of his bitter-ness and complex. Though it is Leslie Caron (Lili)'s vehicle, but much more interesting study is the role of Mel Ferrer.
Of course the question remains, whether the very young and innocent Lili would fall to the charm of the Magician, her puppy love/ infatuation, or would be able to discover the flawed, but still real gem, the puppeteer. Of course in real life probably the ending won't be as 'Logical', since at that age, people don't follow head.

Entertaining
A movie with Cary Grant could rarely miss on the entertainment value. This is also one of those, a bit light hearted romcom. It has a natural propaganda element (of WW2), which I normally avoid, but it wasn't so obvious to make it unbearable. The movie is about one of the not-too-straight hero (Grant), a professional (read unethical) gambler, who avoids getting drafted, by assuming the name of one who was medically unfit. Naturally he would fall in for one of the persons on other end of spectrum, a woman, who can't be drafted (why? there were WACs), and sells war-bonds instead. It is all about is transformation (thankfully not due to heroine, but due to some other factor). Eexcellent part by some of the people on side, especially Charles Bickford, who had many times played the supporting person to excellence.
