Excellent recorder, but sold "as-is for parts"
1 of 1 found this helpful This recorder was advertised as "for parts" and indeed, the recording side does not recognize discs. The playback side seems to work, so given the low price I really can't complain. This is one of the recorders made by LG Electronics, which were solidly built and, when working, perform very well.

Original remotes work best
I have a LITEON LVW5116GHC+ that seemed to be working, but "universal" remotes failed to access important functions needed to record DVDs. Three vendors of replacement remotes were found on Amazon.uk, but none would ship to the US owing to the overseas postage rates having gone up by about a factor of three. While original remotes are likely to cover the features better than a "clone" they are not new and could have problems, though this is the same situation as with the recorder I have. The remote I got had some corrosion on one of the springs in the battery compartment, but it wasn't too hard to clean off and wouldn't have been much trouble since it was on the part connecting the two batteries, not the terminals that power the remote. I checked the "NO" box for "Is it easy to program" since no programming is needed to run the DVD recorder, and while there may be a way to operate a TV from it, I don't have the instruction manual for the recorder. So this item worked fine, an excellent solution to the problem I had.

Small recorder, but not compatible with current discs
The recorder was described as being able to play discs, but it would not record. I found that recording was possible, but with the usual problems of other Philips recorders, where it only works with some discs, So I was able to record one Maxell disc, but the next one crashed halfway through, and the portion that recorded had "noise" on playback. Not really the fault of the recorder, though others work better with discs currently on the market. The recorder is compact, and has more features than the physically similar CDR 560, but like other "second generation" Philips models is a bit more awkward to use, requiring a selection of "recording mode" before recording can be started. But certainly, for the low price I paid, it was a great find.
