Beautiful for looking at and perusing from your shelf, and to cook out of
This book was so popular in 2010 when it was published ,with introduction by Alice Water, that it is now rare. It is a beautiful large heavy book, 300 pp. with interviews and pictures of the grandmothers, their milieus and their cooking and perfect for a wonderful present. "This is a book about women and food and listening." These are grandmothers, not in general the great-grandmothers you might picture. They are still lively, forceful and supple. Therefore these are regional traditional versions of accessible recipes still cooked in Italian households, not arcane versions of long-extinct recipes. Fresh seasonal ingredients (both vegetarian and meat-based), as you might expect from an Water-approved book. The osso bucco from Milan, from Maria. Mary's 3 Tuscan soups. A complex lasagne with bechamel, truffles and prosciutto from Uscha in the Calabria region. Stacked potato pie. Walnut black pepper cookies. I am looking forward to spring to cook the baby artichokes with garlic, herbs and wine recipe. And so on and so forth.

Fun old-style English manor mystery
This is the first novel by G.M. Malliet, who has gone on to have a career studded with Agatha and Macavity shout-outs. This is a nice sturdy reprint from 2017, lovely print and paper. This writer writes a romp, with lots of humor and sardonic wit, plenty of description, good conversations, and an exaggerated/clear-cut cast of characters. I got out of reading the "mystery" category when everybody and his aunt chimed in writing them, a couple of decades ago, and then the genre lost its reputation for almost always being "well-written," as far as I was concerned. This is a happy exception.

Everything you hoped Werner Herzog would deliver in a book
Herzog walks in the dead of winter from Munich to Paris in the belief his effort will save his ill friend, Lotte Eisner. It is pure Herzog: He notices objects nobody else would, beautiful fragments, interesting scenes and memories, endures wet and frozen feet... This is a unique book. 125 crystalline pages.
