Magic time-traveling nostalgia machine
If you, like me, thought that 2003 was the apex of video gaming, you're going to love the Nintendo Gamecube. Set that fancy HDTV to a 4:3 ratio, put on your favorite throwback NBA jersey, and blast the Nelli on spotify. This is a nostalgia machine.
It hearkens back to a time when Nintendo wasn't afraid of it's own wacky ideas. From the fever-dream Super Mario Sunshine (which would definitely not have been greenlit today) to Metroid's tranformation to a first person shooter/adventure, some of Nintendo's best, and most divisive, work is present on this platform.
The console itself is fantastic. Sturdy, attractive, and small, it doesn't take up the entirety of your entertainment center space (looking at you, Xbox) but present enough power to play just about anything from Need for Speed to Zelda Wind Waker. The best, most fun console from this time period. Nostalgic and forward thinking all at once. A brilliant console.

Basically required, good values on ebay
6 of 7 found this helpful I mean, it's a year of a spectacular online service and most sellers here sell it for less than Sony's MSRP. You really can't go wrong.
All in all, it provides online play (which I still think you shouldn't have to pay for, but whatever) but Sony also gives out a couple of free games every month as long as you're a subscriber, so it's one of those things where the longer you subscribe, the more valuable it really it.
The games have been a little hit or miss this past year, and the online service is iffy sometimes, and by no means does it approach the value prop of Microsoft's GamesPass ultimate... but it's basically required if you want to take full advantage of the PS4's functionality.
